About the Artist

Shen Chao-Liang was born in Tainan, Taiwan, in 1968. He obtained his master’s degree from the Graduate School of the Applied Media Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts. He worked as a photojournalist and vice convenor for the Entertainment, Art and Literature News Center of the Liberty Times, the artist in residence at National Central University, Taiwan, and chairman of the Portfolio Review Committee, Young Art Taipei.

Shen has dedicated to feature photography since 1993, starting from his early works of Reflections of Nan-Fang-Ao (2001) to the latter series of YULAN Magnolia Flower (2008), Tsukiji Fish Market (2010) , STAGE (2011) , SINGERS & STAGES (2013) and Taiwanese Vaudeville Troupes (2016) . The collection of works focuses on the social landscapes and life conditions on the realities of the day, and strives through photography to formulate reader consciousness while at the same time fostering dialogue.

Shen won the Golden Tripod Award for Best Photography (magazine category) of R.O.C.(Taiwan) in 2000, 2002 and 2012, the Asia Award in Sagamihara, Japan (2004), the Dong-gang Photography Award, Korea (2006), the Artists Wanted: Photography Category Award, NY, USA (2011), and the IPA (International Photography Awards) 1st Place in Professional: Book of Documentary, LA, USA (2012), 2015 The Best Publish Award, Dali International Photography Exhibition, and the 2015 Wu San-Lien Award, respectively.

In addition to being published in journals home and abroad, Shen’s works have been exhibited in museums and art institutions in the United States, Canada, France, UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Cambodia and PRC China. His photographs have been entered into the collections of National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Dong-gang Museum of Photography, and Sagamihara Gallery.

Curated events included the Photo Portfolio Review Program of Young Art Taipei, On the Cutting Edge: Aspects of Korean Contemporary Photography, Emerging Photographers in Taiwan, The Journey of a Lifetime–The Photo Exhibition of Chang Chao-tang, and the Yet Another Gaze – A New Horizon for Contemporary Taiwanese Photography. Aside from his endeavors in photographic creation, commentary and research, Shen currently teaches photography as associate professor at National Taiwan University of Artsy.
